Bangkok is a big place, and if it’s your first time visiting it can become a quite confusing choice on where to stay. With a population of over 12 million people and covering more than 605 square miles, picking where to stay would confuse even the most seasoned traveller.
I’ve been living in Bangkok for on and off for well over a year now, and here are three spots I’d recommended looking into for your first holiday here.
Asoke
Asoke is in the heart of Sukhumvit, it has plenty of public transport and sky train links. You have many different hotels to choose from all varying in price, and a lot of Thai and Western food options.
Asoke is more aimed towards the tourist who enjoys the nightlife and all other hidden pleasures Bangkok has to offer. You’re are within walking distance of several local bars and clubs, messages parlours and the famous Soi Cowboy and Nana Soi 4. Just to warn you now, Asoke and the nearby area is a totally difference place once the sun goes down, so if you’re a couple or family looking for something more laid back, perhaps think about the next option I will suggest.
Phar Nakhon
Phar Nakhon is located in what is known as “old Bangkok”. It’s very close the many tourist attractions, including the famous Grand Palace, Koh San Road, and the Chayo Phraya River. Sadly there’s not sky train routes nearby, but there will be an abidance of taxis all around, and they are incredibly cheap in Bangkok. Phar Nakhon is ideal for singles, couples, and families, there’s lots of things to see and do, great food options, and a chance to see what Bangkok was like it become a metropolis.
On-Nut
On-Nut is based along the BTS sky train path, and is a great base to locate yourself to get around the area of Sukhumvit. On-Nut is a predominately Thai area with plenty of local food options and shops. You’re just far enough to be out of the tourist area, but close enough to get there within 5-10 minutes on a taxi. Being a mostly Thai area, hotels and restaurants in the area are very cheap.
All three areas are great options to base yourself for your first holiday to Bangkok. If you’re travelling alone I’d suggest either Asoke or Phar Nakhon as they are two areas with a lot of tourist traffic. Some travellers like to immerse themselves in the local culture and “live like a local” as the saying goes, for those people I would suggest On-Nut.
