Calle Crisologo a glimpse of the past
Calle Crisologo showcases houses that were built from the 16th century so if you want to experience a glimpse of the past, you should visit Vigan!!!
How to go? There are two ways.
By land: It will take up to eight hours depending on the traffic. It might be tiring but it’s worth it.
By air & land: Manila- Laoag by plane is one hour plus another one hour from Laoag- Vigan. This is pricier but a lot quicker.
This street will not be awarded by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site for nothing. The old buildings are well preserved and most of it are converted into hotels, restaurants and even souvenir shops. Imagine checking-in in a hotel that was over hundred years. Yes, it might be a little creepy because of how many generations has lived there but it’s also educating because it will give you the vibe of the Spanish era. The secret for a worthwhile trip here is try everything that’s old: from riding kalesas to visiting the museum-like buildings.
Must try’s
Kalesa is a horse drawn carriage that is used since the 18th century. You can try riding the kalesa for only 150 php for one hour.
Pinakbet Pizza. All veggie pizza available at Café Leona for 250 php.
Vigan Empanada. Thin crusted empanada filled with vegetables and Vigan longganiza. The empanada goes with the “sukang iloko” their local vinegar
Vigan Longganiza is basically a sausage with lots of garlic and spices.
Bagnet. It’s a deep fried pork that is so crunchy!
Calle Crisologo in Vigan, some of its history
Vigan, even before the Spaniards came in the Philippines has been a major trading site. The locals used to barter gold, beeswax and their other products with the Chinese. The typical house back then is two storeys high, the first floor is for business and the second floor is used by the family. Some of the houses in Vigan is still used for the same purpose which proves that they really treasure the history of their place.
If you want to know more about the history of Vigan, ask the locals. They know best. After all its their home.
