Manila: Experiencing an Epiphany of sorts towards Cold Brew Coffee

Cold brew coffee has recently sparked curiosity among coffee lovers worldwide. Is it better than the traditional brewing method? Is it stronger? Bitter? More acidic? Questions pile up about this method that we have to try it for ourselves to know the difference.

Manila thirsts for coffee. Every day, Starbucks outlets are packed with people of all ages to spend their hard-earned cash for great coffee. But other coffee shops are reinventing their blends by introducing cold brew coffee.

What is a cold brew?

Compared to the usual coffee brewing method we know, cold brew allows you to prepare coffee in big batches. Here’s how its brewed perfectly:

  1. Mix coffee grounds with cold water.
  2. Transfer to an airtight container and leave it overnight
  3. The next day, strain coffee grounds using a cheesecloth or strainer
  4. Keep in a locked container and refrigerate
  5. Shelf life is up to 2 weeks

Now that you have your very own cold brew concentrate, preparing a glass is easy.

  1. Fill your glass with 1 cup of ice
  2. Pour ¼ cup cold brew (or more depending on how strong you want it)
  3. Add your choice of milk and sweetener

That’s it. To make your homemade cold brew extra special, here are some extra tips.

  1. Make sure you use coarsely ground coffee.
  2. The coffee-water ratio must be high, i.e., 2 cups ground coffee is mixed with 9 cups water. That alone makes 12 servings.
  3. To prevent the cold brew from having a bitter flavor, strain the coffee beans slowly. Avoid pressing it.
